Adebayor Tries To Engineer Chelsea Move

Souce: Graham Lister, Goal.com

Manchester City are reportedly furious with Emmanuel Adebayor after the Arsenal striker allegedly tried to engineer a move to Chelsea.

In a development that may not surprise Arsenal fans - but may frustrate those who had been looking forward to his exit from the Emirates - the Togolese international may have sabotaged his proposed big-money move to Eastlands.

According to The Daily Mail, Adebayor's advisers tried to line up a move to Chelsea on Friday night. They had, according to the paper, also offered the player to City's rivals Manchester United when talks with the Eastlands outfit over personal terms of £170,000 a week seemed to be stalling.

However, later in the week, Adebayor had appeared ready to agree a move to City and go to Manchester for a medical.

Now City officials are annoyed to have learned that Adebayor has also been offered to Chelsea.

Apparently he even met Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger to discuss the possibility of remaining at the Emirates for another season - but the French tactician has made it clear he does not want him back. Arsenal would like to honour the deal they have agreed with City.

The Mail claims that City will not pull the plug on the deal just yet, and will hold further talks over the weekend to salvage the transfer.

Chelsea's Terry on US tour, but Cole ruled out

Sources: AFP 2009

LONDON — Captain John Terry has joined Chelsea for their pre-season tour of the USA, but midfielder Joe Cole has been ruled out following knee surgery, the Premier League club confirmed on Thursday.

There has been much speculation about Terry's future after Manchester City revealed they had made an offer for the defender, but Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon insisted on Wednesday that the player is not for sale.

And, despite reports that City are still pursuing the player, Chelsea have now confirmed that Terry will join up with the rest of the squad for the four-match pre-season tour.

Meanwhile, Cole required the operation to correct a small tear to his meniscus in his knee and is expected back in full training in one month.

The midfielder had recently recovered from cruciate ligament damage sustained in January, which ruled him out of the rest of the 2008-09 season.

Chelsea travel to the US on Thursday and will play the opening match of their tour against Seattle Sounders on Saturday.

John Terry should win Champions League with Chelsea before Manchester City move

Sources: Brian Moore
Published: 7:30AM BST 16 Jul 2009

A few seasons ago, with Chelsea flush with the millions Roman Abramovich pumped into the club, the Matthew Harding Stand taunted Liverpool’s Steven Gerrard, telling him he would never play for Chelsea. To rub it in they followed this by singing: “We’ll buy him anyway.” All that was missing was the waving of bundles of £20 notes.

Gerrard’s refusal to join Chelsea, which was closer than some think, was down to loyalty to Liverpool or if you are a conspiracy theorist, the result of an orchestrated campaign of abuse towards Gerrard and his family. The anger of Liverpool fans was drowned out with cries about the freedom of choice and the like.

Recent approaches from the new moneybags club, Manchester City, for Chelsea captain John Terry has shown the Stamford Bridge faithful the reality of being on the wrong end of an economic mismatch. It isn’t a pleasant feeling and they don’t like it. Nobody should be pleased at a smash-and-grab attempt for a player that came through a club’s ranks and climbed to the rarefied heights of leading his country; but doesn’t it say: do unto others?

In a sane world the signing of a five-year contract, which includes the ludicrous stipulation that a player will remain the club’s highest earner even in times of injury and poor form, should be a reliable indication of a player’s long-term plans. Clubs should be safe in the knowledge that a player who is a multi-millionaire and makes a decision will not have his head turned by money alone.

When that player says his commitment has been shown by signing such a document, we should be able to take him at face value.

Two strands of thought emerge from those Chelsea fans who believe Terry can do no wrong and will stay. The first is that this is another episode of Terry renegotiating his contract. If it is, it is becoming increasingly tedious. Having signed a magnificently rewarding contract only recently, it is distasteful for this to be in play again. At some point a club has to say enough is enough, whoever the player. If, as others claim, this is just Terry seeking reassurances over the direction of the club, there are a number of points raised by this. It is a dangerous precedent to allow any player to be the judge of whether a club is, or is not, planning properly.

He is unlikely to be privy to the right information to make such a call and it is facile to argue that players know which other players are the most talented. That is an entirely different issue. Unless Terry has his own short, medium and long-term strategy, one that accounts for the multiple competitions, player fitness and form and so on, he is above himself in believing he knows best.

A final aside on this point; given that Terry would be 34 at the end of his contract, there is more than a slim possibility that with his injury record and fantastically committed style of play, the time will come when a manager should consider whether playing Terry or a younger player is the best choice. This is unavoidable, but how much faith would you have in any player being sufficiently objective to step aside for a player that shows promise but no medals?

Accepting, for argument’s sake, that clubs should allow a player this largesse, Terry’s method of seeking reassurance is hardly the right way. As captain of the club and a player expressly lauded by his incoming manager, Terry, if he has genuine concerns, should air them in private. He can be as forceful behind closed doors as he wishes, but to create uncertainty and risk alienating supporters is hardly in the club’s best interests. If this really is Terry’s motivation, why could he not tell Chelsea that unless he heard the right things he would then talk to City? To do this while asking for assurances is to put a gun to the head of his employers, who will now have to slap him down or swallow the public embarrassment of having it known that Terry has ultimate control over their club. Whatever explanations are offered, this is a simple test of loyalty; similar to the one that faced Frank Lampard about a year ago.

Another player that brought success to Chelsea, and without Abramovich’s cash, was Gianluca Vialli. Terry could do no better than consider the interview he gave to Radio Five Live recently, when Vialli set out the issue in a quiet and dignified way, showing common sense and that he had considered the point from the correct perspective. “I ask myself, when I finish playing does it matter whether I have in the bank £50 million or £61 million?” the Italian said.

If the answer to the above is affirmative then that shows a warped set of values and not one of a true competitor.

You may argue that in moving to City, Terry would be proving the reverse because he is taking on a challenge to thrust City into the top echelon of English and European football. This would hold water, had Terry delivered to his adoring Chelsea faithful everything they sought, but he has not. It is not fair to lay at Terry’s feet Chelsea’s failure to beat Manchester United in the 2008 Champions League final. Had Didier Drogba demonstrated possession of a brain or Nicolas Anelka shown courage, Terry would not have had to take the penalty in the first place.

Terry owes Chelsea that trophy before he can say his work is done and that he needs a new challenge. Deliver that holy grail and no Chelsea fan would have cause for complaint. Go now and it can only be about cash; no, sorry, even more cash, and that is not the player that Chelsea fans love.

John Terry Is Not For Sale "At Any Price"

Sources: Premiership Latest (Scott Harkness) on Wed, 2009-07-15 16:46

Chelsea chief executive Peter Kenyon has tried to quash rumours that Chelsea skipper John Terry is on the verge of a big-money move to Manchester City by stating that Terry is not for sale.

Manchester City recently saw a second offer to sign the England skipper rejected by Chelsea, although the bid remains on the table and City are believed to be lining-up a third bid.

The 28-year-old, who has been the subject of a £30m bid from Eastlands recently, has not publicly spoken about his future. However, Chelsea are hoping that Terry will soon make a statement to show his intentions of staying at Stamford Bridge.

New Chelsea manager Carlo Ancelotti has made it clear that John Terry remains an integral part of his plans for the club and that he isn't for sale.

However, on Wednesday, Peter Kenyon has also voiced his opinion to try and end the speculation.

Kenyon, speaking to The Independent, said: "He [Terry] is not available at any price.

"He's got a three-year contract. He's told us he doesn't want to go and we don't want him to go. End of story."

Hughes: Terry may welcome a "new challenge" at City

Mark Hughes has confirmed Manchester City could make a third bid for John Terry and said the England captain may welcome a "a change of scenery".

The Citizens remain optimistic that Terry wishes to join them given the England skipper is said to be unhappy at the failure of Chelsea to sign the high-profile targets they were looking for this summer. Terry is yet to make a public statement on the matter, giving rise to speculation that he may yet join City's big-spending "project".

Hughes has been a fan of Terry since his own spell at Chelsea well over a decade ago and described him as an "outstanding player and an outstanding person" and admitted he may make another offer for the tough-tackling central defender.

He continued: "I've thought that since I first met him when he was a young boy at Chelsea and I was a player there, and if the opportunity has presented itself to bring a player of that calibre to the club we will try our hardest to do it. We've already had conversations with Chelsea to that regard and we would like the opportunity to speak to John Terry now."

"We made an offer and Chelsea made their view plain, we have to respect that," said Hughes. "But in the future we may revisit it."

The Welshman compared Terry's potential departure from Chelsea, his sole club so far in his career, to his own leaving of Manchester United in 1995 after a near-15-year association. He said: "It is not a question of finance, or money, it is about a different challenge, and John being at a different stage in his life and his career, and maybe that is why there hasn't been a response [to commit himself to Chelsea] because John is seriously thinking in those terms. I went through that process myself as a player and I can understand if that is the way he is thinking."

Terry is due to fly out to the USA ahead of Chelsea's pre-season tour, which includes World Football Challenge matches with AC Milan, Inter Milan and Club America.

The Blues fly to Seattle later this week, before taking on Inter in California, and Drogba is eagerly anticipating the trip, telling Chelsea's official website, "It is always good to be in a country like America with different people.

"Seattle was the first time I was coming to play for Chelsea and I have very good memories of it so I am very happy to go back there. I like LA, the weather is nice, it is perfect weather to train there

"It is good to play these kind of games against big teams and we really want to improve our condition and be ready for the first game against Manchester United [in the Community Shield] and do everything to win the title because that is very important for us this season."

Drogba has only just returned to training due to his international commitments, and he conceded that he still had some work to do to reach full fitness.

"I was back to the Ivory Coast for some games for World Cup qualification, we had two wins so it was good, and then I had two weeks off," he said.

"I still need to catch up with the other players on the fitness but it will be quicker than if for example we had four weeks off. I feel like I haven't put on any weight so I think the pre-season will be easier for me. I hope I will lose two or three kilos to be really fit for the season.

"I hope I will start the season the way I finished the last one - strong, scoring goals and playing good."

Peter Kenyon Ponders Chelsea Exit

Peter Kenyon is rumoured to be considering leaving Chelsea, after re-negotiating their shirt sponsorship deal.

According to The Times, Kenyon is keen to leave Stamford Bridge on a high, and having just secured an improved five-year extension to Chelsea's shirt sponsorship deal with Samsung, he might feel that the time is right to move on.

Kenyon is reported to be feeling increasingly sidelined at the club, having played little part in Carlo Ancelotti's appointment, and been on holiday when Luiz Felipe Scolari was sacked. In addition, the recent appointment of Frank Arnesen as sporting director will reduce Kenyon's input into the signing of new players.

Manchester City are rumoured to be interested in securing his services, but job offers should not be thin on the ground for Kenyon, who was at Manchester United before Chelsea.

The London club, however, are adamant that Kenyon is staying put.

Chelsea's Transfer Rumours And Round-Up: 14-15 July

Sources : Goal.com 14 Jul 2009 15:49:48

Ambitious Manchester City sealed a deal for Carlos Tevez this afternoon after the Argentinian forward successfully passed his medical. The former Manchester United man signs a five-year contract at Eastlands and will wear the number 32 shirt.

Their manager, Mark Hughes, has also confirmed that negotiations for Arsenal's Emmanuel Adebayor are on-going. More details on that deal are expected as the week progresses.

City are expected to continue their recruitment drive for other positions too with news that Real Madrid's Guti has already turned down the advances of the Citizens while a deal for John Terry is still reportedly in the offing. Carlo Ancelotti, the coach at Chelsea, has played down the possibility of his captain leaving, but there is still no word from the Terry camp about a Stamford Bridge stay.

Even more speculatively perhaps, comes the news that City may try for LA Galaxy's David Beckham as part of their quest to develop their brand.

AC Milan, too, have seen themselves linked with some high-profile signings; Luis Fabiano is expected to leave Sevilla for the Rossoneri in the near future while his Sao Paulo alumnus, Hernanes, would be only too happy to join the Brazilian exiles at Milanello.

The Diavoli have also been touted as contenders for Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, the unloved Real Madrid forward. However, it seems that Stuttgart are in pole position for the Dutchman; the Bundesliga side have reached a deal with Madrid but not with the player as yet.

Elsewhere in Germany, Tim Borowski looks set to swap Bayern Munich for his old side, Werder Bremen. FCB, meanwhile, have again ruled out the sale of Franck Ribery, despite the overtures from the likes of Chelsea, Barcelona and Real Madrid,.

For their part, Chelsea are set to wave goodbye to Ricardo Carvalho; the Portugal centre-back looks certain to leave Stamford Bridge for Inter once a fee is reached between the two clubs.

Less certain is the fate of Didier Drogba. Reports had the Ivorian linked with the Nerazzurri, but only as part of a deal that would see Zlatan Ibrahimovic join the Pensioners.

Barcelona are still hopeful of landing David Villa; coach Pep Guardiola has reportedly told the Valencia striker that the Blaugrana are going to be patient in their attempts to recruit him from Los Che.

Eidur Gudjohnsen has emerged as a loan target for West Ham United; that move would conveniently free-up Villa's potential number 7 shirt at Camp Nou.

Didier Zokora has swapped England for Spain; the Ivory Coast central midfielder has completed his move from Tottenham Hotspur to Sevilla. The London club are reportedly seeking a replacement in the shape of Inter's Patrick Vieira, and are willing to add Jermaine Jenas to the bargain.

In Italy, Felipe Melo has all but completed his move from Fiorentina to Juventus. The Old Lady missed out on long-term target Gaetano D'Agostino and his club, Udinese, have revealed that they are still waiting for contact from Real Madrid about a potential deal.

David Beckham Join Chelsea?

Sources: by: Philip Duncan 14 July 2009

FORMER England captain David Beckham has changed his stance over a return to the Premier League, by revealing he would consider a move if it improved his chances of playing in the 2010 World Cup.

The LA Galaxy star will complete a six-month loan-spell after the Major League Soccer season ends in November.

Last season, the ex-Manchester United midfielder spent half a year at AC Milan under Carlo Ancelotti. And Beckham’s revelation that he would return to England’s top league has put the new Chelsea boss among the favourites to land the 34-year-old.

"I would definitely consider it," Beckham said of a move back to England.

"Never say never. When I left United I said I would never want to play for another English club.

"My heart was in Manchester - and I couldn't see myself wearing another shirt in the Premiership and playing against United. Now I couldn't rule it out."

Despite Chelsea’s interest, Beckham is likely to return to the San Siro when the MLS season draws to a close.

"Obviously Milan expressed that they want me to go back, so I don't see any reason why that would change," he added.

"We'll have to wait and see. I hope to be going back there."

Chelsea Plotting €70m Swoop For Inter's Ibrahimovic

Sources : Arjun Miglani, Goal.com Jul 11, 2009 6:50:35 PM

Chelsea are planning a sensational swoop for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, according to The News of the World.

Apparently, the Blues are ready to offer €70 million plus Ricardo Carvalho and Deco, the Portuguese pair in whom the Nerazzurri have expressed interest.

Ibrahimovic is well aware of the London club's interest, saying, "I am fully aware that Chelsea want to sign me and, of course, it is very flattering.

"They are one of the biggest teams in Europe and the Premier League is one of the best leagues in the world."

If the deal goes through, it will more than double Chelsea's record transfer fee, when they paid €34m for Andriy Shevchenko.

Chelsea would also have to match Ibrahimovic's current wages of around €12m per year, but the Swedish striker insisted that a potential move was not about money.

"Money is not the most important thing," he continued. "I will base my decision on what's good for me, what suits me.

"It is about asking: will I still be able to be special in the league that I am going to, the team I am going to? Are my qualities right for the Premier League or not?"

Terry Venables Feels Chelsea Cannot Afford To Loosen Grip On John Terry

Sources: Alan Dawson, Goal.com

Former Chelsea captain Terry Venables has claimed that John Terry, is too valuable a commodity for the Blues to cash-in on, and believes the club need the 28-year-old to guide the Stamford Bridge side into the realms they are yet to venture; namely, by lifting the Champions League trophy.

“The important part of this is the timing,” Venables explained to British broadsheet the Telegraph. “And I don’t think this is the right time. If Chelsea had won the Champions League then there would have been a new era, but Chelsea need experience and leadership and that’s what he brings.

“People talk about his back problems, but he plays a lot of games every season and Chelsea get great value from his leadership.

“In Carlo Ancelotti, Chelsea have a likeable sort of guy, one who goes out and talks to people, and they remain a strong side,” the 66-year-old concluded.

Manchester City have made Terry one of their primary targets this summer and are allegedly readying a third bid, after their previous two were rebuffed by Chelsea.

Sky Sports News today reported that Terry had requested a meeting with club owner Roman Abramovich, but not over any expected pay-rise. The ambitious skipper wanted reassurances that the Blues would adhere to an aggressive transfer policy in the market, in order to ensure they do not, again, fall behind Manchester United and Liverpool in the title race next season.

Grant tips Terry stay

By Chris Burton Last updated: 14th July 2009 (Skysports.com)

Former Chelsea boss Avram Grant admits be would be 'surprised' if John Terry were to leave the club.

The Blues skipper has been strongly linked with a move to free-spending Manchester City of late, with Mark Hughes publicly expressing his admiration for the England international.

Chelsea have been quick to dash the speculation, insisting Terry is not for sale, but the rumours persist.

Grant, who was in charge of Chelsea when they reached the 2008 UEFA Champions League final, believes Terry would find it difficult to leave Stamford Bridge after spending his entire professional career in West London and is confident the centre-half will not be heading to Eastlands.

"I would be surprised," he said.

"I don't know what happened since I left, I can only speak from my time at Chelsea.

"He was a very good captain and a very good player. But I'm not at Chelsea now so I don't know what has happened.

"I don't think John Terry cares about money. You see how he is, he is desperate to win games and to do it in the right way."

Atmosphere
Ex-Israel national coach Grant went on to reveal that Terry played an integral role at Chelsea during his time at the club, helping him to dispel the sense of disappointment which had followed Jose Mourinho's departure.

"I must say that I came to Chelsea at a very difficult time with the atmosphere around the team, the image of the team, the results were not so good," he added.

"One of the reasons that we recovered so well was the players and John Terry was a wonderful captain. I will never forget that.

"I think you see people by how they behave in difficult times. It is the same for all of us, coaches and players. If you saw how John Terry behaved at that difficult time when I arrived at Chelsea - which everyone knows the situation was very bad in many aspects - you could see he was very, very good for the team.

"But what happened now I must say I don't know, and it's not for me to say."

Inter Back In For Chelsea Striker Drogba - Report

The Nerazzurri would consider selling Ibrahimovic to Chelsea, but only if Drogba arrives as part of the deal, according to reports in Italy...

Inter are ready to consider Chelsea's reported mega-offer for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, but they want Didier Drogba as part of the deal, according to Il Corriere Dello Sport.

On Sunday, reports in England claimed the Blues wanted to offer the Italians Ricardo Carvalho, Deco and €58million cash for the Sweden striker. However, Inter would prefer to see Drogba arrive according to voices in Italy.

The Italian champions are ready to listen to a better offer from the west London side, but they will not sell 'Ibra' in a deal which does not suit coach Jose Mourinho.

Inter are currently on their tour of the USA, but it is said there could be new developments regarding a possible deal within the next week.

On Monday the Inter striker's agent Mino Raiola claimed Chelsea were interested in his client, but said that no offers had been made. In addition, Raiola added that his man was not keen on leaving the San Siro.

Despite the claims, Inter have not made a comment on the rumours, while head of the Chelsea press office Steve Atkins is said to have denied the recent reports.

Carlo Ancelotti Plays Down John Terry's Chelsea Exit Talk

The new Blues boss, not yet in his third week occupying the Chelsea hotseat, wants to keep his important players together.

There are few one-club men left in the modern game and John Terry, a seemingly sturdy symbol of all things Chelsea, was long regarded as the modern embodiment of a dying sentiment. However, as Manchester City loomed ominously over Stamford Bridge with a cloud of financial clout, temptations may have been swayed.

Italian tactician Carlo Ancelotti, though, has today indicated that he hopes Terry will remain at the club, as he intends on keeping his "important" players together.

The former AC Milan manager, a trainer with grand pedigree in continental success both as a player and as a coach, has already overseen his first training sessions and has therefore begun to assess his squad.

The 50-year-old has singled out a spine of English talent as fundamental to the club's success; the captain Terry, Frank Lampard and Joe Cole have been included for special praise from Ancelotti.

Together with the aforementioned Anglican trident, a further trio - one of recruits - have been gaining press for their differing backgrounds and new responsibilities. When pressed as to how former Middlesbrough goalkeeper Ross Turnbull, highly-rated forward Daniel Sturridge, and Russian trickster Yuri Zhirkov, were coping with the rigours of life in west London, Ancelotti responded on the club's official website, "They work very well. They have a good relationship between the players, a very good team spirit.

"There are some players that are important for this team, [John] Terry, [Frank] Lampard, [Joe] Cole, very important."

Chelsea are about to leave for a potentially money-spinning tour of the United States. They face Seattle on Saturday.
